Objective:
My objective is to teach students about the history of visual merchandising and how it evolved into today’s elaborate displays of window art in different fashion stores. I also plan on giving a very basic definition of what visual merchandising is.
Procedure:
- First, I will hook the audience by saying something along the lines of saying, “Have you ever walked into a store and saw a product displayed that makes you want to buy it right away?” and proceed to say that it is the job of the visual merchandiser’s to do that.
- From that, I will lead into saying the definition of visual merchandising. “Visual merchandising is the art of putting window displays together and figuring out where merchandise is placed in order to get the most sales possible.”
- Then I will dive into the history of visual merchandising. I will discuss how stores used to display products in a way that generates interest from consumers. But with the advent of new technology that allowed for large panes of glass to be produced, department stores adopted it and pioneered the way for visual merchandising. Then I will discuss how the career and language of visual merchandising came to be.
- I will quickly restate the job of a visual merchandiser and then ask questions pertaining to my presentation.
Check For Understanding:
I will ask questions at the end of my presentation to make sure they understand, like “What is the job of a visual merchandiser?”
Resources/Materials:
I will need a poster board of pictures from the late 1800’s to today of different displays of window art to show the evolution of it.
